A 31-year-old caregiver has been charged with attempted murder in the burglary and assault of a 67-year-old quadriplegic man in Franklin on July 1st.

The victim, Phillip Everette, was bedridden with head injuries at the time of the incident; he is also paralyzed from the neck down.

Everette’s caregiver, Erica Shandrika Bradshaw, told police she found Everette suffering from lacerations to his face; he was alone at the time of the incident, officials say.

Everette talked to NewsChannel 3 just hours after the attack.

“She came over to the bed and had a stick in her hand and started hitting my head. She didn’t hit nothing but my head. She walked away, came back and then did a beating on my head again,” he said.

Everette’s recollection of the attack adds up with court documents.

They say Bradshaw broke in, hit Everette over the head with a wooden deck rail, then stole money out of his wallet that was in his nightstand.

She also turned off the power breaker and ripped out the phone line.

“Something woke me up,” he said, “Somebody cracked into my back door. But when I woke up all the lights were off I thought we had a power failure. The person who came in cut the power off so it could be dark so I couldn’t see who was doing it.”

Police say Everette’s family hired Bradshaw to take care of him and that officers questioned here on the day of the attack. They say she was very calm and wouldn’t confirm or deny anything.

The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office says Bradshaw was arrested after detectives developed probable cause through interviews and some anonymous tips.
