Chesapeake family’s tearful embrace with daughter who killed her mother

Posted

Chesapeake, Va. – Donald Hutson says his daughter Rachel was his best friend. Two years later, he is still struggling to accept how the daughter he loved so much is the same person who killed his wife in cold blood.

Now, for the first time since 2013, Rachel is in the arms of her family.

"I know that what she did was wrong, but I'll never stop loving her," said Rachel's sister Sarah.

A family, that, in the dark hours after Thanksgiving night, she tore apart.

Donald Hutson and his daughter Sarah were Black Friday shopping when they got the call from Rachel, telling them she'd done the dirty deed. They rushed home to find Susan Hutson shot to death in her own bed.

"I just wanted to hold her hand and tell her it was OK, but I knew that wouldn't do anything," Sarah said, reflecting on that night.

Now, for the first time since the trial, the family met face to face in a surprise, tearful embrace. The three met at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail, where Rachel is serving a 15 year sentence, to appear on the Dr. Phil show.

Donald Hutson is supportive of his daughter to this very day.

"She should be in the psychiatric ward in a state hospital somewhere, not in jail," he told Dr. Phil McGraw.

During the trial, Hutson's defense attorney argued she had a mental illness that had gone untreated for years.
