PORTSMOUTH, Va. — A fire broke out at a residence in Olde Towne Portsmouth Wednesday afternoon.
Around 3:16 p.m., Portsmouth Emergency Communications received numerous 911 calls for a residential fire at the corner of South Street and Effingham Street.
When crews arrived, they found a two story duplex in flames.
The Portsmouth Fire Department says a second alarm was called and a defensive strategy was put in place to keep the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings.
The fire was brought under control in just over an hour at 4:18 p.m.
Six people and two dogs were displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
The fire is still under investigation, but preliminary reports are indicating that the fire is accidental and not suspicious, according to the fire department.
