HAMPTON, Va. - The Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue responded to a house fire on Rotherham Lane early Saturday morning.
According to fire officials, crews responded to the fire at 5:50 a.m. When the first crews arrived, they reported heavy smoke and flames coming from a one-story home.
The fire was immediately determined to be an exterior fire operation, and fire officials said a second alarm was called to extinguish the fire faster and protect adjacent homes from the intense heat and flames.
The fire was contained in approximately 20 minutes. The one-story home sustained significant fire, smoke and water damage throughout, and two additional homes were damaged. The home is a total loss.
No one was home at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.
Below-freezing temperatures made firefighting activities more difficult, fire officials said.
The fire's cause remains under investigation. Fire officials say the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
This is a developing story.
