PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Firefighters with Portsmouth Fire Rescue and Emergency Services responded to an apartment fire in the 300 block of Green Street Wednesday afternoon.
Dispatchers received a call about an apartment on fire just after 3 p.m.
Crews arrived on scene to find a smoke coming from the seventh floor of an eight-story multi-family apartment building. All residents were safely outside the apartment when firefighters got there.
Crews made an aggressive interior tack using the building's standpipe system in the stairwells and quickly put out the fire in the apartment in question.
The fire was contained to the apartment where it started and had no extension. There was only minor water damage and smoke in other areas.
Paramedics evaluated a man for smoke inhalation, but he refused to be taken to the hospital.
At this time, fire officials don't know how many people will need help with lodging. The Red Cross also responded to the scene to make sure everyone was properly taken care of.
The Portsmouth Fire Marshal's Office is still investigating the cause of the fire.
