PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Portsmouth Fire officials say a family of three has been displaced after a fire destroyed their home in the 300 block of Dinwiddie Street on Monday morning.
Officials say the family was home when the fire started around 3:30 a.m., but they were able to make it out safely.
Flames from the home damaged the neighboring homes on either side.
"I saw the flames and kept thinking that it was jumping to my roof so I got my wife and son and animals out and made sure my neighbors were awake and aware," says neighbor Graham Meehan.
Firefighters say the wind made it difficult to put the fire out.
The family has been moved to a hotel.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
