NORFOLK, Va. - 'Normalizing Excellence' -- that is how the HM-12 Sea Dragons would describe what they do day in, and day out.

This squadron is the US Navy's sole MH-53E Fleet Replacement Squadron, with a mission to provide the finest MH-53E flight training to pilots and naval aircrew while instilling the tactical foundation that enables the development of experienced professionals.

As a Fleet Replacement Squadron, HM-12 trains pilots and aircrewmen to fly the MH-53E helo in preparation for a variety of worldwide missions, including Airborne Mine Countermeasures, Fleet Logistics Support, Heavy Lift, and Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief.

The squadron was established aboard Naval Air Station Norfolk, Virginia on 1 April 1971.

HM-12 was the first squadron of its kind and operates as a operational and a readiness training unit.
