PORTSMOUTH, Va. – New toll rates at the Downtown and Midtown tunnels will go into effect on Sunday, January 1, 2017.
The increase is part of the comprehensive agreement between Virginia Department of Transportation and Elizabeth River Crossings.
The 2017 E-ZPass toll rates at the Downtown and Midtown tunnels are as follows:
- Passenger vehicles (two axles, including motorcycles):
- $1.65 during the off-peak period
- $1.95 during peak period
- Heavy vehicles (three or more axles, includes cars with trailers)
- $4.94 during the off-peak period
- $7.79 during the peak period
Peak period is Monday through Friday, 5:30 a.m.—9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. — 7:00 p.m. All other times, including weekends and designated holidays, are considered off-peak.
Unregistered Pay by Plate users will pay a $3.30 processing fee per trip, in addition to the E-ZPass toll rate. Motorists are encouraged to sign up for E-ZPass to pay the lowest toll rate without processing fees.
Tolls help fund the construction, operations and maintenance at the Downtown and Midtown tunnels and at the new Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway (MLK). Between toll commencement in Feb. 2014 and the end of 2016, Elizabeth River Tunnels toll rate increases were reduced in order minimize user impacts during construction.
Toll rate increase will revert to the original Comprehensive Agreement terms beginning Jan. 1, 2017.
