VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A 48-year-old man who pleaded guilty to stabbing his girlfriend approximately 10-15 times in late 2015 was sentenced Wednesday to serve eight years in prison.

Troy Darnell Simmons pleaded guilty to Malicious Wounding in April of 2016.

Court documents say on November 29, 2015, Simmons confronted his girlfriend at their Virginia Beach home and stabbed her 10-15 times in the head, chest and neck. He was reportedly screaming “I’m going to kill you,” before he drove off.

Neighbors called 911 and the victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police found Simmons a short time later. He admitted to stabbing his girlfriend but would not say where the knife came from or how many times he stabbed her.

Simmons was sentenced to 20 years with 12 years suspended, leaving eight years to serve. That is almost twice the high-end of the Virginia State Sentencing Guidelines, which recommended Simmons serve no more than four years and eight months in prison.
