August 23 marks 5 year anniversary of Virginia earthquake

Posted

VIRGINIA – Five years ago Tuesday was one that many won’t forget.

A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Commonwealth and much of the east coast.

At 1:51 p.m. in 2011, the earth began to shake in Mineral, Virginia.

But the quake was felt from Canadian border to the Carolinas.

Experts estimate one third of the U.S. population felt the earthquake, more than any other quake in American history.

The damage was most intense in Louisa County, where the high school and hundreds of other buildings were severely  damaged.

It was only last year that the new high school building was finally done and ready for students.
