Newport News Officers pay special visit to 8-year-old battling cancer

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Members of the Newport News Police Department paid a special visit to an 8-year-old boy battling cancer.

EJ Barcus has had Stage 3 High Risk Neuroblastoma since 2013. He spend a majority of 2013 and 2014 in the hospital due to chemotherapy, radiation and overall complications from the cancer.

EJ developed an interest in law enforcement after watching the TV show Criminal Minds in the hospital with his mom. He wants to become an FBI agent when he grows up.

After hearing about EJ’s situation,  Master Police Officer Jeffrey Wright, Sergeant Michael Covey, Master Police Detective Jayson Thompson, Forensic Technician Alison Fox and Newport News Police K-9s Lacey, Havoc and Murphy visited EJ at his school.

The officers gave him a special gift, a tactical vest owned by Forensic Technician Fox’s son.

Members of the NNPD K-9 Unit also performed a K-9 demonstration for EJ, his mother, his teacher and his classmates.
