Suspicious package smoking on Amtrak train in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A suspicious package smoking on an Amtrak train in Newport News caused a traffic delay early Sunday evening.

It happened at the intersection of Elmhurst Street and Yorktown Road just before 6:00 pm. The Newport News Fire Department told News 3 the Hazardous Materials and Bomb Squad were called to search the train. When crews arrived on the scene, they evacuated train passengers and train cars away from the car in question. After an investigation, the package turned out to be a portable cell phone charger that was smoking. The incident was deemed incidental and no one was hurt.
