KITTY HAWK, N.C. -A stretch of NC 12 has been battered by waves and even crumbled into the ocean during previous storms.

Residents said they have noticed crews building up the dune line since the recent washout, but still worry about future flooding.

Tim Hass with the N-C-D-O-T tells News 3 the portion of Highway 12 past Bonner Bridge is an area of concern.

That area got a lot of rain during tropical storm Bonnie. There was some street flooding and we're expected to get a lot of rain again," said Hass. As of Monday evening, there was already overwash on the highway.

The Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be extremely cautious if they venture outdoors. "If they see standing water on the roadways, please do not drive into it," said Hass.

As Tropical Storm Colin moves towards Florida, the Outer Banks could see rough surf and high winds.

Dare County's Emergency Management team has released a statement warning residents and vacationers about the possibility of severe weather. They encourage homeowners to tie down outdoor furniture and secure anything that could be damaged by rain or wind.

"Tuesday is the day to hunker down and stay inside," said Hass.
