Former Portsmouth Vice Mayor and Councilman Charles Whitehurst dies at 78

PORTSMOUTH, Va. –  Former Portsmouth Councilman and Vice Mayor Charles Whitehurst died on Saturday, according to the City of Portsmouth.

Current Vice Mayor Elizabeth Psimas says Whitehurst was battling Parkinson’s Disease. He died on his birthday.

Portsmouth Councilman Bill Moody posted his condolences on Facebook.

Whitehurst was first elected Portsmouth City Treasurer in November 1985. He became a member of the Portsmouth City Council in 1998 and was reelected for a second term in 2002.

Whitehurst was a graduate of I.C. Norcom High School and received a bachelor’s degree of Norfolk State University.
