James City County Police say officers responded to the Ace Hardware store on John Tyler Highway around 6 p.m. on April 15 after it was reported that two people had been in the store and one had used a counterfeit $20 bill.

By the time officers arrived, the suspects had already left the store.

The manager saw them leaving a nearby Rite Aid and was able to get the license plate number from their vehicle as they left.

Police say they later learned that they were denied a transaction at the Rite Aid for attempting to use another counterfeit bill.

Counterfeit bills with the same serial number were later found to have been used in multiple stores in the area.

The two were identified as Anthony Tyrell Johnson-Opoku (AKA Clifford Anthony Johnson), 24 of Portsmouth and Danielle C. Witter-Wilson, 21 of Virginia Beach who have been charged with 3 counts of felony uttering counterfeit bills and 1 count of conspiracy to commit a felony each.

They were arrested by Newport News Police in May.

Witter-Wilson’s mugshot has been released, but James City County Police say they are still investigating additional cases that may involve Johnson.
