Norfolk - A Norfolk teenager and her friend say they were walking through Northside Park on Sunday when they came across a group of teenage boys brutally attacking a turtle.

"It was still in the net and the kid he brought it up and the three others backed away and were cheering him on and he just started really hard just doing it," said the teenage girl who stopped the attack.

The girl's father asked News 3 not to use her name. He says he is worried the boys involved in the attack may target her. The girl says that thought never crossed her mind, she just wanted to help the turtle.

"We yelled at them to stop it but they didn't listen so we went in there and we got the net from them and got the turtle out," she said.

That's when the girl noticed how hurt the turtle was.

"He was injured, his eye was bashed in."

The girls called police and their parents.  According to Norfolk Police, the group of four boys are between the ages of 10 and 14 years-old. The injured turtle was taken in and examined by Animal Control. Police say it was later released back into the wild.

The teen girl says she is thrilled to learn the turtle survived.

"That makes me so happy I was so worried for the turtle," she said.
