NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The president of Newport News Shipbuilding announced Wednesday that 210 shipbuilders who were laid off will get their jobs back.

Matt Mulherin released the following letter to the shipbuilders:

Dear Shipbuilders:

I am writing you today with good news.  Due to updated workload manning plans and growth work on several programs, we are in the process of recalling 210 employees who were laid off in February.

These recalls will affect employees in the Sheet Metal (X32), Waterfront Support Services (X36) and Surface Preparation and Treatment (X33) trades.  These employees will be offered the opportunity to return to available work in accordance with our union contract.

Although we are not completely through the workload valley, this news is more positive than originally predicted, and we will continue to evaluate our manning needs throughout the year.

Thank you for your continued focus on the work at hand and strong performance.  It’s making a positive impact.

Sincerely,

Matt Mulherin
President
