The Hampton Roads Beard and Stache Society loves facial hair and loves supporting the United States military!

NewsChannel 3's Kurt Williams caught up with them at the Uno Pizzeria in Norfolk off Virginia Beach Boulevard.

They thought Kurt was there to do a story on facial hair. But the real reason is because we wanted to shine a spotlight on how these bearded guys support military causes like Dogs On Deployment, an organization that provides foster homes for the pets of service personnel while on deployment.  "So that when they come home that animal is waiting for them. They didn't have to go into a shelter; they didn't have to give up their pet."  Karin Pettinger, the local contact for Dogs On Deployment.

The group also supports other organizations that provide various services to homeless veterans.

For those reasons, we presented the Hampton Roads Beard and Stache Society with a People Taking Action award, along with a $300 Visa gift card from our community partner Southern Bank.

Josh Kimm, president of the group, says that was a big surprise and was thankful, but added it was important for them to be more than just a social group with a love of facial hair. "We know this is a big military area and we love supporting our military and veterans."

One of the members, Adam Stull is glad to be giving back to the community,  "To see the money at work and what we did, our hard work all come to fruition, it's an awesome feeling. I mean, brings tears to your eyes."
