NORFOLK, Va. - A Norfolk woman is taking action to give police a new tool, but it's not your typical crime fighting weapon.

"Cuddle bears are meant to give comfort during times of need, "said Missy Douthit.

Cuddle Bears are a teddy bear and book set that are given to children as a buddy when they need it most.

"If you don't have someone to give you a hug, you are able to hug the bear and the bear is able to provide that for you," said Douthit.

As a mother of two, Douthit says her children love stuffed animals, and began to think of other children who may be affected by the recent increase in violent crime in Norfolk.

"My heart hurts with everything that has been going on and I wanted to help in some little way."

Which is why she started fundraising to buy enough Cuddle Bears and Books to put into each Norfolk Police car so when they have to deliver some bad news to a family, they can also bring some comfort.

"It will make it a bit more positive and not turn it into not as a traumatic as a situation," said Douthit. "In some instances it's going to be a sad situation all the way around, but hopefully this will help out at least just a little bit."

To raise money, Douthit is selling handmade greeting cards for $30. For more information on how you can help donate or purchase the cards visit the Cuddles for Kids, Norfolk VA Facebook page.
