NORFOLK, Va. – A big contract means 200 Norfolk shipyard workers will keep their jobs.

BAE Systems is being awarded a $52.5 million contract for maintenance work on the USS Kearsarge. The amphibious assault ship returned to Naval station Norfolk last week.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the work in the contract includes “planning and execution of depot-level maintenance, alterations and modifications that will update and improve the ship’s military and technical capabilities.”

The work is expected to be completed by February 2017.

BAE Spokesperson Karl Johnson says the layoffs will not be necessary because of the new contract and two previous contracts for the USS McFaul destroyer and the USS Gettysburg guided-missile cruiser, worth an additional $78 million dollars.

However,  the 170 workers laid off at the end of March will not be brought back.
