Man killed, police officer seriously injured in Norfolk car crash

NORFOLK, Va. – A man was killed and a police officer injured in a car crash Saturday night.

According to police, the crash was reported around 10:05 p.m. at the intersection of Hampton Boulevard and Surrey Crescent.

A preliminary investigation shows that the police cruiser was traveling south on Hampton Boulevard and a Toyota Prius pulled out from Surry Crescent, then hit the cruiser.

Police say the officer was responding to a gunshot disturbance with their emergency lights activated at the time.

A man driving a Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers in the car.

Police identified the victim as 79-year-old Robert E. Crittsinger Jr.

The officer was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries but the officer is expected to be okay.

The Norfolk Police Traffic Fatality Team is investigating the crash. Once the investigation is done, the information will be turned over to the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for review.
