CHESAPEAKE, Va. - May 7 marks one year since Brianna Armstrong disappeared.
Her friends told Newschannel 3 last year that Armstrong would never go somewhere without telling someone and immediately began a Facebook page and handed out missing person flyers.
Police say the 43-year-old was last seen at Newpointe Shopping Center off of Newton Road in Virginia Beach. Her car was found at the shopping center one week after she was last seen. The doors to her car were still unlocked and the keys were in the ignition. Her purse and shoes were still inside.
Weeks later, police made a gruesome discovery. On May 31, Armstrong's dismembered body was found near the edge of the Great Dismal Swamp by a man riding his bike.
According to the medical examiner, Armstrong died from decapitation and dismemberment. Her body was found in multiple trash bags throughout the swamp.
Several days after Armstrong's body was found, Justin Keith Cornell was arrested and charged with second degree murder. The two worked together as massage therapists at Kunckles 'N' Knots. According to Armstrong's husband, the two were dating.
A year after Armstrong's disappearance, Cornell remains behind bars at the Virginia Beach City Jail. His trial is scheduled to begin May 23.
