NAHRAWAN, Iraq – A car bomb killed at least 24 people and wounded dozens more east of Baghdad on Saturday, police officials said.

The bomb, which was in a parked car, targeted a busy livestock market in Nahrawan town, police said. Thirty eight others suffered injuries.

Nahrawan town is east of Baghdad.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the car bombing.

Iraq has suffered violence since 2003, when U.S. troops invaded and toppled Saddam Hussein from power.

In addition to the violence, terrorist group Islamic State established a foothold in in the country, using it to move into northern Syria.

Sectarian violence has also run rife in the country, pitting Sunis and Shias against each another, with the Kurds gaining a measure of autonomy in the north of the country.
