CURRITUCK COUNTY, NC – All lanes near Caratoke Highway/168 in Currituck County closed after a multi-vehicle accident. One person is dead. The victim has been identified as 59-year-old James L. Nixon of Kitty Hawk.

Police say the accident involved a tractor trailer, pick-up truck and a Humvee.

This happened in the 7400 block of Caratoke Highway. This is in the Jarvisburg area.

The area was closed for several hours for clean-up.

Traffic was detoured on S. Bayview Road and Jarvisburg Road.

Officials say a 2006 Chevy pick-up truck was going north on 158. It crossed the center media and went into southbound traffic and hit a tractor trailer.

The tractor trailer was empty and it then hit a Humvee that was in the right lane. The Hummer over corrected and ran off of the road.

A fire started inside of the tractor trailer.

The driver of the pick-up truck was dead on the scene.

The tractor trailer driver was taken to the Outer Banks hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Hummer was not transported.
