Supporters demand answers on why Virginia Beach principal is on leave

Virginia Beach, Va. - Students, parents, and supporters of Dr. Brian Matney told the school board they want answers as to why the Landstown High School principal is on administrative leave.

"This is a disgrace for Virginia Beach Public Schools," said one supporter on Tuesday night. "This is not right. We all feel a burden. We can't sleep."

The school system announced Matney was put on administrative leave last Friday, but the reason remains unclear. Dr. Dan Edwards, the school board chairman, said the reason had to do with school safety, but didn't elaborate.

"It's a very awkward situation," he said.

Matney's supporters are worried the lack of information is giving off the wrong impression and don't understand why it would happen towards the end of the school year.

"Ever since he's been gone, the student body has been distracted and confused," said Justice Barid, a senior.

An acting principal is now in charge at Landstown. Dr. Matney's son, William, says his dad has lost about 15-pounds since the announcement and has high blood pressure. He's so distraught about the decision, according to William.

Matney also has now hired an attorney.
