JAMES CITY Co., Va. - Gabriel Maness, who family members called Gabe, wasrandomly shot and killed Sunday at a Farm Fresh grocery store in James City County by 55-year-old Brian Hicks, according to police.

His father, Jim Maness, said he can't believe his 34 year-old son is gone.

He said, "Jesus, please wake me up from this terrible dream."

Jim Maness said his son was picking up jelly donuts for his wife and young daughter, which is something he did every weekend, when the shooting happened.

"Everything was about Kristy and the baby," said Jim Maness.

Jim Maness said his daughter-in-law is 8 months pregnant.

He said the two of them met 12 years ago in the Army.

"I'm so mad at that guy for just picking someone out and randomly killing him.  If he would've done it to someone else I would just be as furious but that was my son and my granddaughter doesn't have a daddy and wants to know who's gonna be her daddy," said Jim Maness.

Gabe loved golf and the Cardinals.

"It's hard to walk through the house and keep looking for him.  It's hard to drive by the golf course," said Jim Maness.

Above everything, Jim Maness said his son adored his family.

"When Kristy called the whole world stopped it was him and Kristy," said Jim Maness.

Now this family is left wondering why this happened and how they are going to move forward.

"I thought I knew a lot of heartache and pain in my life but there's nothing like this," said Jim Maness.

The viewing is Friday at 5 p.m. and the funeral is scheduled for Sunday at Vincent Funeral Home located at 9923 Pocahontas Trail in Providence Forge.
