A firefighter was shot and killed, and a second one critically injured while responding to a medical call at a home in Maryland, authorities said.

John Ulmschneider, 39, died following the shooting Friday night in Prince George’s County, fire officials said.

The firefighters were responding to a call from a “concerned citizen” about the occupant in the home, said county Police Chief Henry P. Stawinski.

As they tried to enter the home, the occupant shot them, he said. Specifics on the call were unclear, but authorities said it was medical-related.

A suspect is in custody.

Ulmschneider was a 13-year veteran of the county’s emergency medical services, said Benjamin Barksdale, the deputy chief of the county Fire and EMS Department.

The second firefighter was critically wounded and is undergoing treatment, county fire officials said.

A civilian bystander was also shot, but the severity of the injuries is unknown.
