CHESAPEAKE, Va.-- For many of us, springtime means allergies. Sinus discomfort, sneezing and itchy eyes are just a few of the symptoms that humans face, but what about pets?

BluePearl Veterinary Partners released a statement saying pollen can make your cats and dogs develop skin and ear infections from  scratching their irritated skin.

Dr. David Genovese who works in the dermatology service of The Greenbrier branch of the BluePearl Vet Hospital said  pet owners often complain their pets are scratching or licking their feet and making the skin raw. He said the itch is coming from seasonal allergies.

Veterinarians within the practice have stated that pets absorb allergens through their skin and their itching turns into a rash that may eventually need treatment. Vets specializing in dermatologic care use diagnostic tests to see if the animal indeed has an allergy and if medication, vaccines, antihistamines, steroids, air filters or bathing can help alleviate them from their discomfort.
