SUV hits 120 miles per hour before crash kills man, injures 10-year-girl

Caroline County, Va. – A man was killed and two other people, including a 10-year-old girl, were injured when their SUV ran off the road and hit a tree during a police pursuit on Tuesday evening.

According to WTVR, deputies in Caroline County were pursuing the SUV on Route 17 in Essex when it crashed near Route 631.

Deputies told WTVR’s Jon Burkett that they had attempted to pull the driver over for driving 80 MPH in a 55 MPH zone.  The pursuit reached speeds of 120 MPH before the crash.

Virginia State Police say the driver, 52-year-old Darryl W. Rusten of Ruther Glen and the 10-year-old girl were flown to VCU Medical Center with serious injuries. Rusten was not wearing a seat belt, but the girl was.

Another passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Darryl D. Farmer of Ruther Glen, died at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt.

The two men and child are related, however police have not disclosed their exact relationships.
