Teen detained in Elizabeth City after 18-year-old is fatally stabbed in neck

Elizabeth City, N.C. – A teen has been detained after an 18-year-old woman died from a knife wound to the neck on Sunday.

This occurred in the 1000 block of Butlers Lane.

Police were called about an assault with a deadly weapon at 11:35 a.m.

When they arrived, they found Summer Waaga lying on the ground in front of a home with a knife in her neck.

A neighbor tried to perform CPR on the woman. She was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

Someone called police saying that a teen suspect ran away from the scene wearing a red flannel shirt on top of a white t-shirt and black leggings.  The suspect was headed toward Elizabeth City State University.

Officers were able to locate and detain the suspect, Morgan McDonald, 17.

Police say the victim got into an argument with the suspect before the stabbing.

She walked outside and collapsed in the front yard. Police do not know what the argument was about.

The two were hanging out with friends at the time of the fight.
