Virginia Zoo invites public to wish elephants farewell

Posted

Norfolk, Va. – You’re invited to participate in farewell activities forCita and Lisa, the elephants at the Virginia Zoo, as they prepare to move to Zoo Miami!

Activities will begin on March 28 and conclude April 10.

During the week, Virginia Zoo visitors will be invited to sign a banner that will travel with the elephants to Zoo Miami. Staff members will also chat with visitors at 1 p.m. in front of the elephant habitat in the Africa-Okavango Delta exhibit.

On weekends between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., there will be elephant-themed crafts for kids and a special enrichment presentation following the staff chat at 1 p.m.  The enrichment presentation is an activity that encourages the animal’s natural behaviors.

The Virginia Zoo announced last year that the elephants would be relocated to Miamiafter staff and the board explored the best options available for the female elephants.  The Virginia Zoo decided Zoo Miami offers Cita and Lisa the best combination of climate, space and socialization.
