HOPEWELL, Va. (WTVR) - A family said their son's school is punishing him because his dreadlocks violate the dress code policy.

His family said the boy, seventh grader Isaiah Freeman, had to cut his hair if he wanted to stay at his private school because it was too long and violated school rules.

“I was a bit confused because my hair has been that way for so long,” Isaiah said.

His family said Isaiah had been wearing his hair in dreadlocks since he was in third grade.

Isaiah’s dad said they pulled his hair back so it would not be in his face or over his ears but school administrators found that the pulled back hair was not acceptable. They said Isaiah needed to cut his hair or he would face a referral every day.
