Portsmouth, Va. – Two boys were injured Sunday in separate accidental shootings, according to police.
The first shooting happened around 10:40 a.m. at a home on Lancer Drive.
A woman called 911 saying she was driving her 7-year-old son to Maryview Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the hand.
He was transported to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters a short time later. The child’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
After investigating, police say they determined the 7-year-old had been playing with an unsecured firearm in his home.
Around 11:16 a.m., medics and officers were called to another shooting involving a child.
According to police, a 9-year-old boy was shot in the leg on Moregate Lane.
He was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
Detectives say that shooting was also accidental. The 9-year-old was shot by another boy playing with a gun found outside.
Both investigations are still ongoing and charges are pending in both cases.
Portsmouth Police say these incidents are an important reminder to talk to your kids about gun safety, even if you don’t own a gun.
