Hampton, Va. -"I have to say I forgive her. I have to. Because if I don`t forgive her... it would kill me."
Maceo Barnes is talking about Gracielle Garnett.
She was the babysitter for his four-month-old son Kyrie Crooms and the same woman who is charged with the baby's murder.
"I`m trying to be this strong Christian person right now. If I think negative, and want to react in some type of revenge way, it won`t get me anywhere and it won`t bring my son back," Barnes said.
Court documents say Garnett was babysitting Kyrie on November 30th. That's when Garnett called the baby's mom and said Kyrie wasn't breathing.
Medics rushed the baby boy to the hospital. Court documents say X-rays showed he had abusive head trauma associated with being violently shaken.
"I had to ask the doctors, 'Is it going to get better or is it going to get worse?' I told him tell me the truth. And they told me that he`s brain dead and is not going to get better," Barnes said.
That's when Barnes said he had to make a choice.
"I had to make the hardest decision as a father with a newborn baby. I had to make the decision to take him off the life support machine."
While he did that, all he thought about was the life he could have had with his son.
"I`ve been thinking about us going fishing, to the movies, playing basketball, everything. And now I don`t have that chance to do it. I want justice. I want her to pay for what she did. "
