Emporia officer injured during shooting incident at nightclub that left one dead

Emporia, Va. – A man is facing charges after a shooting at an Emporia nightclub left one dead and a police officer injured early Sunday morning.

Emporia Police Chief Ricky Pinksaw told CBS 6 in Richmond that around 1:50 a.m. two men, 26-year-old Christopher Rayshawn Powell of Ivor and George Cain III of Emporia, began arguing at the Smoove Operators nightclub on North Main Street. He said Powell pulled out a gun and shot Cain in the torso.

Cain was rushed to Southern Virginia Regional Hospital where he later died.

Police arrested Powell and charged him with the murder of Cain. He is being without bond.

It was while Officer William King was trying to arrest Powell that he was shot in the leg. King was rushed to Southern Virginia Regional Hospital before being flown to VCU Medical Center. He is currently listed in stable condition.
