Chesapeake, Va. – A car crashed into a tree and caught fire early Sunday morning just east of Route 17 in Chesapeake, according to officials.

Police say the driver of the car that hit a tree about 1:10 a.m. in the 1300 block of Benefit Road died after the vehicle struck a tree and caught on fire with the driver still inside.

The driver was the sole occupant in the vehicle.

Detective Boykin with Chesapeake Police says the gender and identity of the driver has to be determined through DNA tests because of the fire. This may take several days to complete.
