People Taking Action: Norfolk cheer coach, business owner honored for big heart

Posted

Norfolk, Va. - A Norfolk woman has been teaching cheerleaders what it takes to be a star both on and off the court.

On Tuesday we learned more about the lessons she’s passing along that have people yelling "hip-hip-hooray!"

NewsChannel 3 along with a few excited cheerleaders entered her business chanting cheers completely surprising Danielle Flood, who goes by Dani.

Dani owns a hair salon. She’s also a cheerleading coach for the Hampton Roads Seven Cities Pro AM League.

Shamaine Williams wanted us to honor Dani for how she spends countless hours volunteering with these girls summer after summer, and it's more than cheerleading.

She also teaches the girls about etiquette and encourages them to do well in school. She also tells them to be respectful and to make good choices.

“She's just a wonderful person to be around. She always gives off that positive energy,” says Christina Pettaway, a cheerleader.

“She's an excellent role model, and I believe she's helped my daughter to be more self-confident, to get out there, to have some confidence about herself,” says a parent, Sherry Moltamore.

For these reasons and more, we presented her with a NewsChannel 3 People Taking Action Award along with our community partners Southern Bank.

Southern Bank also gave her a $300 Visa gift card.

Dani says she expects to spend the money on the girls.

She’s formed some amazing bonds with the girls. Some even became emotional just talking about her.
