Norfolk, Va. – A Virginia-class submarine named after a long-serving Virginia senator has officially been commissioned as the USS John Warner.
The ceremony took place Saturday at Naval Station Norfolk.
Senator Warner was there as the sub became the newest member of the naval fleet.
The fast attack submarine is the first of its kind to be named after a person.
Construction on the John Warner began in 2010 with nearly 4,000 shipbuilders working on the project.
Final sea trials were completed in June and the ship was officially delivered to the U.S. Navy two and a half months ahead of schedule.
