Man hit by SUV while running from gunfire in Newport News

Newport News, Va. – A man was allegedly struck by an SUV as he ran from gunshots in Newport News early Sunday morning.

Officers responded at 4:43 AM in reference to gunshots and an individual injured on the 7900 block of Merrimac Lane. When they arrived, they found a 39-year-old Newport News man lying in the street.

The man told police he had been running from gunfire and was hit in the back by a car.

He said he was speaking to an acquaintance outside a party at a residence on Merrimac Lane when they heard gunshots. The man began running and was suddenly hit in his back by a white Ford SUV driven by the person he had just spoken to. The SUV then left the scene.

Multiple gunshots struck vehicles on Merrimac Lane.

Witnesses said when the shooting occurred, everyone began running to their vehicles and left the area.

Officers found bullet casings and a street sign at the corner of 80th Street and Merrimac Lane which appeared to have been hit by a vehicle.

A woman reported to police that her rental car had been struck multiple times by bullets while she was attending a party in the 7900 block of Merrimac Lane. Another woman told police that while picking up a friend from a party on that same block, her vehicle was also hit by bullets. Her Saturn had a bullet hole in the windshield and front bumper.

The investigation is ongoing.
