Kitty Hawk, N.C. (WTKR) - A portion of N.C. 12 in Kitty Hawk is now closed to thru traffic so that crews can rebuild a section of dune that washed away during a coastal storm in early May.

Crews have closed N.C.12 between Lillian Street and White Avenue for the work.

The storm in early May washed out about 500 feet of dune and 200 feet of pavement near Milepost 4.

Crews were able to rebuild and reopen the road shortly after, but were only able to make temporary repairs to the dune to protect the road.

With the necessary permits obtained, the entire dune can now be rebuilt.

North Carolina's Department of Transportation is working with the Town of Kitty Hawk to maintain access to homes, businesses and the public beach access during the work.

A detour will be in place throughout the duration of the project for through traffic:

  • Northbound from N.C. 12: Left on White Avenue, right on U.S. 158, right to E. Balchen Street back to N.C. 12.
  • Southbound from N.C. 12: Right on Lillian Street, Left on U.S. 158, Left on White Avenue back to N.C.12.

The work is expected to take about 30 days, weather permitting.
