York County, Va. - NewsChannel 3 has obtained video filmed by a witness just moments after a York County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man on Wednesday.
The video begins just moments after the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Damien Harrell.
York County officials say they pulled Harrell over during an investigation into a traffic accident. The deputy reportedly asked Harrell several times what his name was and he would not comply. At some point, Harrell pulled out a .380 caliber Bersa semi-automatic handgun.
In response, the deputy shot and killed Harrell. Officials say the deputy fired six times at Harrell.
The witness video begins just a few minutes after the deputy shot and killed Harrell. You can see the deputy using a Taser on a man who was a passenger in the vehicle Harrell was driving. Ultimately, the passenger was not charged. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and released shortly afterwards.
NewsChannel 3 has learned Harrell was wanted in Newport News and was a convicted felon.
Right now, the two deputies involved are on paid administrative leave as the department investigates.
