Hatteras Island, N.C. (WTKR) - Repairs are continuing to the Bonner Bridge over the Oregon Inlet.
NCDOT has been doing several repair projects to the aging structure that provides the only highway access to and from the Outer Banks.
Steel on seven crutch bents is currently being replaced.
As of Thursday, four of the seven crutch bents have new steel in place.
The work has to be done about four feet under water, meaning crews are dealing with currents and wakes from boats.
The crutch bent work is scheduled to be finished in early June.
NCDOT has also replaced loose and deteriorated concrete on the bridge.
That work is scheduled to be completed in mid-June.
