James City County, Va. - A man is accused of breaking into his workplace and stealing his own paycheck.
When James City County Police arrested 25-year-old Alexander Morton three days later, officers say they found fake money and drugs.
“Why would I steal my own check? No it wasn't me,” he says.
Police say Morton broke into Lars Construction where he worked as a laborer and stole his own check - a paycheck he was scheduled to get the next day. Investigators then discovered that check had been cashed.
Morton admits he did cash his check, but says he did not steal it. He says an employee gave him the paycheck a day before. However, police say out of a stack of paychecks in the office, Morton’s was the only one missing.
On Monday, police say they saw Morton driving down Pocahontas Trail. When they stopped him, police say they found two counterfeit $50 bills and Spice.
“Yeah, I mean I had a one hit on me,” Morton told NewsChannel 3. “You know what I’m saying? I had a one hit on me. What's wrong with having Spice?”
NewsChannel 3 also asked Morton about the counterfeit bills.
“When they pulled me over I had two 50's but like I said I thought they were real,” Morton says. “I just found those in Newport News. I told the officer that and everything. I just texted my girl saying 'Babe, I just found $100.”
Morton told us he has a history of break-ins on his now-growing record.
“I’m in jail, I’m probably out of the job, I’m pretty sure of that,” Morton says. “I might be out of the house because my girl can't pay rent by herself. I'm losing everything for nothing.”
He's scheduled to be in court next week.
