Williamsburg, Va. - A Williamsburg man was charged with assaulting a police officer over the weekend, police tell NewsChannel 3.

On April 13, 2015 around 2 a.m., Williamsburg Police responded to a restaurant located in the 700 block of Scotland Street for a fight involving five to six people.

Officers arrived on scene and found that most of the suspects had left the area prior to their arrival.

One person, identified as 24-year-old Ikeem Rashaun West of Williamsburg, returned to the location to retrieve some of his property that was lost during the scuffle. As West was retrieving his property, he deliberately struck one of the officers in the shoulder with his own, police say. Another officer who witnessed the assault immediately took West into custody.

West was transported to the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, where he was charged with Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer. The officer was not injured during the incident.
