Suffolk, Va. – Two families now have to find a new place to stay after flames ripped through the duplex they were living in on Thursday. A firefighter was also injured and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Suffolk fire crews were called out to the scene located in the 100 block of Clay Street at around 4:42 p.m.

When they arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from the second floor back porch. The home had been converted into two duplex units.

Everyone was able to get out before crews arrived. Neighbors were evacuated just as a precaution.

Two adults and four children have all been displaced. They are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Crews had to close several streets as they worked to put the fire out. The fire was determined under control by 7:17 p.m.

The cause is still under investigation.
