Elizabeth City, NC – A 24-year-old man was charged with reckless driving over the weekend after driving a vehicle into the Elizabeth City Police Department building.

Police say early Sunday morning, officers made an arrest after a fight at Checkmates Sports Bar at 400 East Colonial Avenue and transported the suspect, Javon Hopson, to the magistrate’s office for processing.

During that time, some of Hopson’s friends came to check on him. While an officer was walking Hopson to his patrol vehicle for transport, those friends were driving a 2001 white Mercury Grand Marquis near the front of the police station.

The officer noticed what he believed to be the front passenger striking the driver, Tywan Springs, with his fists. Springs then drove the vehicle into the southeast corner of the police station building.

No one was injured. Minor damage was done to the building and the vehicle.

The passenger left the scene and has not yet been identified. Springs was charged with Reckless Driving. It was determined that he had been involved in an altercation with the passenger before the accident.
