Isle of Wight County, Va. - An Isle of Wight County Sheriff's deputy working as a school resource officer (SRO) has been arrested after an investigation into a complaint made by a student in January.

Deputy Alvin Wood

Deputy Alvin Wood, age 47, was assigned as the School Resource Officer at Smithfield High School. SROs patrol the school during the day while school is in session.

On January 8th, the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office says they received a complaint from a student advising that she had been inappropriately touched by Wood.

He was immediately suspended and relieved of his duties at the school. On January 14th, he submitted a resignation to the Isle of Wight County Sheriff's Office.

After a criminal and administrative investigation and consultation with the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office, warrants were issued charging Wood with "Taking Indecent Liberties with a child by person in custodial or supervisory relationship" and "Sexual Battery."

According to a criminal complaint filed in court, the student is a 16-year-old girl.  She told investigators that he locked the door to his office and kissed her.  It goes on to say that he moved her hand to touch his genital area and also touched her inside her pants around the waist band as well as her buttocks.

According to the complaint, she tried to pull away, told the deputy she did not feel comfortable and asked him to stop.

Wood was arrested on Jan. 4 and was taken to the Western Tidewater Regional Jail.  He has since been released.
