Newport News, Va. – An Air Force T-38A training aircraft lost its rear canopy during a takeoff from Langley Air Force Base on Tuesday and immediately made an emergency landing at Newport News/Williamsburg International airport.

The canopy immediately landed on the runway at Langley with no injuries reported and no additional damage to the aircraft.

“The aircraft diverted to Newport News Airport to avoid the canopy on the runway.  Two pilots were on board and sustained no injury.  A safety investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident,” said Air Force Spokesman Alton Dunham.

1st Fighter Wing Commander, Colonel Kevin Huyck said “We are very thankful the pilot was able to quickly and safely recover the aircraft and that there was no additional damage to personnel or property.”
