UPDATE:  Police have identified the victim as Joeseph Maynard Hill, 33, of the 1000 block of Myrtle Court in Newport News.

They say the cause of death was asphyxia due to accidental drowning.

Newport News, Va. - A man's body has been recovered after a canoe overturned on Kerry Lake Tuesday afternoon.

Police and fire crews received a call of an overturned boat with two people inside just before 4 p.m.

When they arrived, they learned that two men had been in the canoe and one had been assisted to shore by a neighbor and had been taken to a hospital before medics arrived.

About 5:39 P.M. the fire department dive team recovered a 33-year-old Newport News man from the water. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by medics.

At this time it appears that the men were doing tree work and borrowed the canoe from a neighbor, police say.

Neither man was wearing a flotation device.
