Suffolk Fire and Rescue respond to fire in cotton field

Suffolk, Va. – Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to a fire this afternoon at Holland Road/Route 58 and the 1200 block of Longstreet Lane in the rural Holland borough. The fire took place earlier this afternoon with a combine on a cotton field.

Emergency Communications received the call at 3:28 p.m. and the first units arrived to the scene at 3:35 p.m. The fire began in the combine which caused approximately $50,000 in damages and $1,500 in damages to the cotton module.

Units were able to get the fire under control at 3:41 p.m. Less than an acre of the cotton field was reported to have suffered from the fire and destroyed. No injuries were reported.

Responding units consisted of Engine 7, Medic 7, Brush 1, Tanker 1 and Battalion 1. The Holland Volunteer Fire Department and Brush 7 were also present on the scene.

Suffolk Police provided traffic control at the scene while units took control of the fire. One land of Holland Road/Route 58 eastbound was closed temporarily while units took control of the fire.
